The Sedition Foundry (2019)

trombone and loop station

The printer Isaiah Thomas was a key figures in pushing for American independence. The ruling authorities so disliked his anti-British publications that they referred to his printing office as β€œthe sedition foundry.” The loops in my piece play the mechanical role, and there might be something rebellious about the way the live trombone deliberately disregards their rhythmic framework.

The Sedition Foundry was written for, and is dedicated to the glissando loving Jenny Young.

Note: the printing press in the picture above is the printing press that Isaiah Thomas used to print his newspaper The Massachusetts Spy. He had to smuggle it out of Boston to prevent the British authorities from destroying it. It is, therefore, THE sedition foundry.
