On the sea, the sea (2025)

Two parts

Translating the runes on the Narsaq stick, a thousand year old piece of inscribed pine, has been contentious. It is not helped that the text is some sort of riddle or play on words. While not the most common interpretation, one rendering of the first of the stick’s two sentences is "On the sea, the sea, the sea is the ambush of the Æsir (gods)." While this title was applied after I had finished writing the piece, the shifting, rising, falling sea is a fitting image for this piece.
