Madness Cycles (2017)

saxophone ensemble

After performing my piece He Who Sleeps Behind Mountains, Jeff Humphrey suggested that I write for the University of Southern Mississippi Saxophone Chamber Orchestra. The task of writing a piece for eleven highly skilled performers was initially quite daunting, but I eventually came upon the idea of having different rhythmic cycles occurring simultaneously, expanding or contracting independently. The title and some of the musical material was inspired by William Albright's Saxophone Sonata, the first piece I heard Jeff play back in August 2013.
